It's Like Magic!

"It was like magic," the Vice President of a large customer services group said to me. "I can't believe how much work we accomplished, and in such a short amount of time."

I facilitated an event for a prestigious professional school. At one point, I asked the participants to volunteer to write sections of a lengthy study document. People came flowing to the front of the room to sign up for topics. The dean turned to me: "I can't believe my eyes. No one ever volunteers for anything around here."

One of my coaching clients, the VP of Human Resources for a biotech firm, said to me: "Are you a mind reader? You seem to know what I'm thinking before I do."

Magic? Fortune telling? Actually, no. In professional circles, the services I offer through my consulting practice, Andrew Black Consulting, are known as Organization Development (OD). OD is the process by which an organization develops increased capacity to provide the work stated in its mission. My special gift is to mobilize groups toward critical business-focused outcomes.

Services

I help companies, business units and leadership teams accomplish these four tasks:

  • Strategic planning, goal setting and implementation consulting
  • Executive and leadership development
  • Team building
  • Values clarification and roll-out of the agreed-upon values

Skills

The talents I use in my craft are:

Instructional design and training

  • Creating learning processes to develop organizational capability
  • Presenting workshop content in a powerful way

Executive and leadership coaching

  • Establishing partnerships with individual leaders which identify learning goals, build action plans, and provide accountability for goal completion

Facilitation

  • Designing agendas for high-stakes meetings
  • Leading groups through these agendas to insure that business outcomes are reached

Philosophy

The philosophy that underlies my ability to be successful can be characterized as follows:

  • People support ideas they have helped create. There are simple ways to involve stakeholders in business decisions without losing control of the outcomes.
  • Group work of any kind has a far greater impact if it involves participants in a meaningful way. The effectiveness of any experience correlates highly with the degree to which it is interactive.
  • To be truly worthwhile, OD work has to achieve superior business results, support the personal dignity of the participants and be based on a sense of what is really important. And I've learned a good sense of humor goes a long way.

No magic. Just a sense of accomplishment.
